When working on a home project, one of the most challenging decisions is picking a paint color. Once you have your paint color chosen, you also have to choose the sheen, or finish, of the paint. Paint sheen refers to the level of glossiness or shine in a paint finish. Each sheen has its own set of characteristics, and the choice depends on factors like the level of traffic in the area, desired aesthetics, and the ease of cleaning. For instance, in high-traffic areas or places prone to moisture, a higher sheen like semi-gloss or gloss may be preferred for its durability and washability. In contrast, in areas where a flat and matte appearance is desired, such as on walls with minimal handling, a flat or matte sheen might be more suitable.

Here are some common paint sheens and their applications:

  • Flat/Matte is ideal for ceilings and walls in areas with low traffic. It conceals imperfections well but is not as washable as higher sheens.
  • Eggshell is a versatile sheen suitable for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. It has a low sheen that is more washable than flat paint, making it suitable for moderate-traffic areas.
  • Satin is good for high-traffic areas such as hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms. It has a higher gloss than eggshell, making it more durable and easier to clean.
  • Semi-Gloss is often used for trim, doors, and cabinets. It’s highly durable and easy to clean, making it suitable for areas prone to moisture and heavy use.
  • Gloss is typically used on doors and trim for a high-gloss finish. It is very durable and easy to clean, but it may highlight surface imperfections.
  • And finally, High-Gloss is reserved for specific applications, such as furniture or accent pieces. It provides an extremely shiny finish, is highly durable, and easy to clean.

Obviously these are not strict rules, and swaps can be made for the look and feel of a specific project. Pro tip: The sheen can also affect the look of the color you choose, so make sure to sample your paint in the sheen you plan to use. Do you have a favorite paint finish to use?
