In the world of interior design, there are many different styles that guide us when making design choices. Different styles are often characterized by aesthetics, influences and time periods. Many design styles evolve and change over time. Here are a few broad categories of interior design styles:

Traditional

Traditional design is timeless and classic. It features rich, dark woods, ornate details, and elegant furniture. Symmetry and balance are key elements of this style. Traditional interior design is well-suited to homeowners who appreciate a sense of history, craftsmanship, and a refined, classic aesthetic. It creates a welcoming and elegant environment that is both comfortable and visually pleasing.

Modern

Modern design is characterized by clean lines, minimalism, and a focus on functionality. It often features open spaces, neutral color palettes, and a mix of materials such as glass, metal, and concrete. The most popular sub-category of modern design is mid-century modern, which is distinguished by its clean lines and organic shapes.

Bohemian

Bohemian design (or Boho) is eclectic and free-spirited. Boho is the design style that adheres to the least amount of rules. It often incorporates bold colors, patterns, and a mix of global influences. It’s a style that embraces a relaxed and unconventional atmosphere. Bohemian often pulls from all different styles of architecture, furniture, and decorative objects to create a collected look.

Rustic design draws inspiration from nature and rural settings. It often incorporates raw, natural materials like wood and stone, as well as earthy colors. It has a cozy and warm ambiance. The most popular design styles that fall under the rustic category include industrial, cottage/country, and the most famous, farmhouse.

There are many other interior design styles out there. All design styles can be mixed and matched, and can fall on a spectrum between minimalist and maximalist.

Many of our favorite designers have created a mix of styles for their own unique look. For example, Studio McGee can be called a “classic modern rustic” style. Using a neutral palette, and a “mix and match” approach, mixing vintage with new, to give a collected and classic look. Magnolia Home is considered “contemporary industrial.” They use elements of metals, exposed concrete, and stone, layered with natural elements like plants and natural light.
